The short answer
If you read nothing else, read this.
- Free for any teacher, no school plan: MagicSchool gives 20 AI uses a week. Brisk is a free Chrome and Edge extension with 20+ tools. Khanmigo's teacher tools are free in nearly every country, and SchoolAI, Diffit and Eduaide have free plans too.
- No cap for teachers: SchoolAI puts no cap on teacher chat, Tools and Assistants. Curipod lets you build lessons without limits, with 2 class sessions a week. K-12 teachers Canva has checked get its standard AI tools as much as they like.
- Only for verified US K-12 teachers: ChatGPT for Teachers is free through June 2028, with unlimited messages. Claude for Teachers gives a full year free if you sign up by June 30, 2027. Both check your school email. Teachers at colleges or outside the US cannot get them.
- Free with your school's account: Gemini for Education and Gemini in Classroom are free when your school uses Google Workspace for Education and an admin turns Gemini on. Copilot Chat is free on a school Microsoft 365 A1, A3 or A5 account. You cannot switch these on alone.
- Free AI grading and feedback: CoGrader grades 150 student submissions a month free. Class Companion gives students instant AI feedback on its free teacher plan. Curipod gives every student feedback, in 2 free class sessions a week.
- For students: free on Canva (when you invite them), Curipod (no student accounts), Brisk Boost, Wayground, Kahoot, Formative and Class Companion. MagicSchool student rooms need Plus, Khanmigo for students needs a district partnership or a paid plan, and the ChatGPT and Claude teacher plans are not for students.
- Free with a catch: Kahoot's free plan has no AI tools. Twee gives 5 trial runs, Padlet 3 active padlets and Conker 5 shared quizzes. Wayground's own pages disagree on how much AI free accounts get.
I read the pages of 20 teacher tools. Most are free. The big chatbots need your school.

- Needs
- No school plan
- Students free
- No, rooms need Plus
- Paid from
- $99.96 a year, $12.99 monthly
Each tool answer or reply from Raina, its chatbot, counts as one use, and so do edits. Uses come back every Sunday at midnight UTC. New accounts get 30 days of Plus first, then move to Free, which has no exports, though its help center lists the Presentation Generator as exportable on Free. Plus has unlimited uses, with caps for extreme cases. Its pricing page and a help page put student rooms on Plus, but another help page lists student tools under Free, so check in the app.
In their own words(4, checked 5 Oct)
“Free plan users receive 20 AI generations per week, which includes both initial generations and refinements.”
“Yes, teachers can use MagicSchool independently through Free or Plus plans.”
“Available in: Plus, Enterprise There is no limit on the number of MagicStudent rooms you can create.”

- Needs
- No school plan
- Students free
- 5 Space sessions a year
- Paid from
- Schools only, no public price
- End date
- None
The free plan is called "Free trial", but it has no end date. Chat with Dot, Tools and Assistants have no cap. A session counts each time you run a Space with students, so one Space run five times uses the whole year; your onboarding Space does not count. A few PowerUps, like Flashcards and Mindmap, are paid. SchoolAI has no paid plan for a single teacher: it sells only to schools and districts.
In their own words(4, checked 5 Oct)
“We want the Free trial plan to offer real, lasting value to individual teachers, with no expiration date or countdown clock.”
“Chat with Dot remains available on the Free trial plan for teachers, with uncapped conversations and generations for users of all plans.”
“Tools and Assistants are fully included on the Free trial plan, with no restrictions.”
“Free trial accounts now include 5 Space sessions per year”

- Paid from
- Schools only, custom price
A free extension for Chrome and Edge. If you hit the limit, you can usually go back after about 30 minutes; the limit depends on traffic. Paid plans have no such limit, but Brisk sells them to schools and districts, not to single teachers. New sign-ups get 14 days of Premium first. Students open a Boost activity from a link you share; the student Boost extension is paid.
In their own words(4, checked 5 Oct)
“Yes, Brisk is a totally free Chrome and Edge extension.”
“Brisk's Free Forever Plan for Educators includes 20+ free AI-powered tools”
“Most Brisk users can use Brisk several times per day. Limits can vary depending on traffic, but you can generally return to using Brisk after about 30 minutes.”

From Khan Academy. The free teacher tools are funded through a partnership with Microsoft. They are not offered in Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria and parts of Ukraine. Your Khan Academy account needs the teacher role, and you must be 18 or older to sign up yourself. Students get Khanmigo only through a Khan Academy district partnership, a homeschooling parent, or their own paid plan at 18 or older. The $4 parent plan ($44 a year, US only) with the teacher role turned on unlocks every Khanmigo tool.
In their own words(4, checked 5 Oct)
“Khanmigo’s free teacher tools are now available to educators in nearly every country and region around the world.”
“To use the teacher tools, your Khan Academy account must: Have the teacher role”

Diffit gives no numbers for its free limits, and on free you can open only what you made in the last 90 days. New accounts get every premium feature for a trial; when it ends you are not charged and move to the free version. Students never log in: they see only what you print or share. Diffit says it collects no student data.
In their own words(4, checked 5 Oct)
“We offer a great and always free version for teachers”
“Access content made in the last 90 days”
“No student logins, no student AI.”
“The individual teacher subscription costs $14.99/month or $149.99/year.”

The free plan has a monthly limit, but Eduaide's pricing page does not print the number. Numbers you may see on other sites are not on its own pages. Pro is $49.99 a year, with no monthly limit; there is a monthly option, but we could not see its price, and prices can change by region. Eduaide is for teachers only, not for anyone under 18, and says it collects no student data.
In their own words(4, checked 5 Oct)
“Always free with generation limits.”
“Generation limit for core creation workflows”
“$4.17/mo, billed yearly”
“Eduaide is a teacher-facing platform and is neither designed nor directed toward individuals under the age of 18.”

Students join without accounts, and there is no AI chatbot for them. On free, student answers stop at 1,000 characters. Lessons with an orange crown are school content: you can try three in total, and each uses a session.

- Needs
- US K-12 school email

For teachers, staff, school leaders and district admins at accredited US K-12 schools; SheerID checks that you work there. It also has search, file uploads, connectors and image making. After June 2028 OpenAI says it may add or change prices, with the goal of keeping it affordable. A workspace holds educators from one district only. Some other sites still say June 2027; OpenAI's own pages say June 2028.
In their own words(4, checked 5 Oct)
“ChatGPT for Teachers is free through June 2028 for verified U.S. K–12 educators.”
“like unlimited messages with GPT‑5.1 Auto, search, file uploads, connectors, and image generation”

Your account becomes a free Claude for Teams plan with Pro-level features. Usage limits are higher than on a standard free account, counted over five hours and over a week. Anthropic says extra usage limits apply and plans may change, and does not say what happens after the free year. Districts can set up a free organization for all their staff instead. Claude for Education is a different plan that universities buy, so a college teacher cannot get it alone.
In their own words(4, checked 5 Oct)
“US K-12 educators and districts get free access to premium Claude features, like teaching skills and a connection to evidence-based curricula, aligned to state standards.”
“Sign up by June 30, 2027 for your full year of free access.”
“Individual educators verify with a school email for free access, and accept the K-12 terms themselves.”
“Important: Claude for Teachers is not for students. It's an educator-only offering.”
- Free for teachers

- Needs
- Proof you teach K-12

- Yes, by your invite
- Premium AI
- Up to 200 uses a month
For K-12 teachers now teaching at an accredited school. College teachers, private tutors and homeschool teachers not licensed or employed by a K-12 school cannot get it; Canva points colleges to Canva for Campus. Canva checks you within a few days, and you verify again every 3 years. Standard AI tools are yours as much as you like. Premium AI tools share one monthly allowance of 200 uses, or 20 for Ultra AI tools; after that, Canva says you can keep going with short pauses. Canva says it never uses student data to train AI.
In their own words(4, checked 5 Oct)
“It’s our commitment that Canva Education will remain 100% free for K-12 (primary and secondary) educators, their students, as well as qualified school districts and institutions.”
“Sign up with your education email or upload proof of employment. We'll verify you within a few days and you're good to go.”

Free through your school
Free when your school has the right Google or Microsoft plan and its IT team turns the AI on. A teacher cannot switch these on alone.
- Free for teachers
- Gemini app, 30+ Classroom tools
- Needs
- School Google account
- Students free
- Yes, extra guardrails under 18
- Paid from
- $20 a user yearly, $24 monthly
- Deep Research
- 5 a month
Your school or district signs up for Google Workspace for Education, and an admin turns Gemini on. The Fundamentals edition is free for qualifying schools, and Google says a school can get Gemini this way even if it uses another main suite. Free use has limited access to Google's premium models. Google says your data is not reviewed by people or used to train AI. The paid add-on, bought by the school, is $20 a user a month with a one-year commitment, or $24 billed monthly. Some Classroom features, like suggested feedback on writing (marked coming soon), need it.
In their own words(4, checked 5 Oct)
“Your institution can get Gemini for Education at no cost by signing up for Google for Education Fundamentals, even if you use a different primary productivity suite.”
“Introducing no-cost AI tools in Google Classroom”
“Limited access to our premium AI models”
“Students under 18 get a distinct product experience with extra guardrails and AI literacy resources.”
Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat
- Free for teachers
- Copilot Chat and Teach
- Needs
- School A1, A3 or A5 account
- Students free
- Yes, 13+, if school allows
- Paid from
- $18 a user a month
Sign in with the school account your IT team manages; personal Copilot is a separate product. Teach, in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, makes lesson plans, quizzes and rubrics and changes reading levels. Microsoft's pages disagree on students: its FAQ says higher education students 13 and older, its blog says students 13 and older. For school pupils it depends on the school turning it on. Microsoft says your data stays in your school's Microsoft 365 and is never used to train foundation AI models. Full Microsoft 365 Copilot is an add-on the school buys, at $18 a user a month.
In their own words(4, checked 5 Oct)
“Copilot Chat is available at no cost for users with a Microsoft 365 A1, A3, or A5 license when signed in with their school or work account.”
“Teach is rolling out in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app starting today at no additional cost for education customers”
“It is currently available to faculty, staff, and higher education students aged 13 and older.”
“Your data is isolated within your Microsoft 365 tenant and never used to train foundation models.”
Free with a catch

- Card
- No credit card
Wayground's pages disagree on AI for free accounts: one help page says Limited, another says unlimited AI from September 1, 2026, and the price page outside the US says 10 AI credits a month. AI grading with rubrics is only in school and district plans. Super, the plan for one teacher, has a 7-day free trial. Features and prices differ by region. If your school buys a plan, Wayground says it will pay back teachers who bought Super this school year.
In their own words(4, checked 5 Oct)
“Free for every teacher, forever.”
“No credit card, no commitment.”
“Store up to 20 resources on your account”

Free also has PDF parsing, but Luna's hints, answer explanations and feedback start with paid plans. Google Slides imports and document uploads stop at 200 pages a month. The plans page shows only paid plans, all billed yearly; the free plan is on the home page.
In their own words(4, checked 5 Oct)
“Formative offers a free plan”
“that includes features such as assignment creation, basic question types, and student responses.”
“Chat with Luna ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅”
“All plans are billed annually. The Classroom Plan is $249 per teacher per year”

Kahoot! Go is free, but its plan table shows no AI creation tools; they start with Kahoot!+ Bronze at $36 a year, paid up front. The plan cards also show a monthly price, but the FAQ says no education plan is billed monthly. Its pages disagree on players: the FAQ says 10 a game on Go, while the plan table and help center say 40 for K-12 teachers. Players need no account.
In their own words(4, checked 5 Oct)
“Yes, we offer Kahoot! Go, a free plan for teachers.”
“The availability of Kahoot! AI tool feature depends on your plan.”

Padlet
- Free for teachers
- 3 active padlets
- Needs
- No school plan
- Paid from
- $120 a year, $15 monthly
Padlet gives no AI quota. An AI recipe builds a whole padlet from your description, so the 3-padlet cap is the real limit on free, by our reading. Teacher accounts can use AI recipes. Student accounts cannot on individual plans, and on Classroom and School plans only if the owner turns them on. The free plan is called Neon. The Classroom plan is $160 a year for 2 teachers.
In their own words(4, checked 5 Oct)
“Yes! With a free account, you can have up to 3 active padlets.”
“AI recipes use the power of generative AI to create an entire padlet based on your description.”

Conker
- Free for teachers
- 5 shared quizzes, 50 responses
- Needs
- No school plan
- Paid from
- $5.99 a month
- Quiz size
- 10 questions max
Conker does not say if the free limits reset each month or are totals. Pro shares unlimited quizzes and responses, with up to 40 questions each. A yearly plan saves 16%, but we could not see its price. The site footer still says 2023, so check the app before you rely on this.
In their own words(4, checked 5 Oct)
“Share 5 quizzes”
“50 responses”
“10 question limit”
“$5.99/month”
Twee
- Free for teachers
- 5 trial runs, no Pro tools
- Needs
- No school plan
- Paid from
- $6.50 a month, billed yearly
Twee calls its free tier Twee Trial and does not say the 5 runs come back, so treat it as a trial, not a plan for the year. It also gives 500 credits to turn text into audio. It is made for language teachers, mostly of English as a second language. Basic gives 100 runs a month. Pro is $10.50 a month billed yearly, with a 3-day free trial; checking student answers with AI is a Pro feature. Twee says it gives no refunds.

Questions
What is the best free AI tool for teachers?
It depends on what you need. On your own, SchoolAI puts no cap on teacher chat, Tools and Assistants, MagicSchool gives 20 AI uses a week, and Brisk is a free Chrome and Edge extension with 20+ tools. Verified US K-12 teachers also get ChatGPT for Teachers free through June 2028. With a school Google Workspace for Education account, Gemini is free once an admin turns it on, and a school Microsoft 365 A1, A3 or A5 account gets Copilot Chat free.
Is MagicSchool AI free?
Yes. MagicSchool has a free plan that teachers can use on their own, without a school plan. It gives 20 AI generations a week, and edits count too; they come back every Sunday at midnight UTC. New accounts start with 30 days of Plus, then move to Free, which has no exports except, its help center says, presentations. Plus costs $8.33 a month billed yearly ($99.96), or $12.99 monthly, and has unlimited generations, with caps for extreme cases.
Which free AI tools help with lesson plans?
Google says teachers can use Gemini for Education to kickstart lesson planning, and Microsoft's Teach makes lesson plans, quizzes and rubrics. Both are free on a school account. Verified US K-12 teachers get ChatGPT for Teachers free through June 2028, and Claude for Teachers, with a connection to curricula aligned to state standards, free for a year. Without a school account or a check, MagicSchool, SchoolAI, Brisk, Khanmigo, Eduaide and Diffit have free plans made for teachers.

Claude for Teachers gives US K-12 educators a full year free if they sign up by June 30, 2027. Both check your school email and are not for students. Teachers at colleges or outside the US cannot get these offers.
Are Gemini and Copilot free for teachers?
Through your school, yes. Gemini for Education and Gemini in Classroom are free when your school uses Google Workspace for Education and an admin turns Gemini on; Google says a school can get it at no cost through Google for Education Fundamentals, even if it uses another main suite. Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat is free with a school A1, A3 or A5 account, for staff and, where the school allows, students 13 and older. A teacher cannot switch either on alone.
How we checked
Every fact here comes from the company’s own page, with the sentence it is in. The facts checked for this guide show the day we read them. The tables come from our catalogue, which re-reads each price page on its own. When a page does not say something, we write that, and we never guess. How we check
