Paraphrasing tools and grammar checkers you can use free October 2026

Word limits, sign-up and what you pay for, read on the pages of 16 paraphrasing tools, grammar checkers and AI writers. Every free paraphraser has a limit, but some need no account.
Checked by hand on 16 October 2026, on each company’s own pages.2 of 64 have moved since, re-checked 22h ago.

The short answer
If you read nothing else, read this.
- Most words per free paraphrase: Scribbr takes 125 words at a time, as often as you like, with no account. QuillBot takes 100 words (its help center still says 125). Others count uses: Wordtune 10 rewrites a day, ProWritingAid 10 a day, Paperpal 5 a day, LanguageTool 3 a day.
- No word limit: none of the free paraphrasers we checked is unlimited. QuillBot Premium has no word limit, from $8.33 a month, billed yearly. For grammar, Scribbr's free checker has no character or word limit, and QuillBot runs unlimited checks.
- QuillBot free: 100 words per paraphrase, in 2 of its 9 modes (Standard and Fluency). Grammar checks are unlimited, and you need no account. Longer paraphrases, the other modes and the plagiarism checker are paid, and there is no free trial.
- Grammarly free: spelling and grammar checks, 100 AI prompts a month and a limited number of paraphrase suggestions a day, with a free account. It checks up to 100,000 characters at a time. Full-sentence rewrites, tone changes and plagiarism checks need Pro: $144 a year, or $30 month to month.
- No sign-up: QuillBot, Scribbr, LanguageTool (2,000 characters a text) and DeepL Write (1,500 characters at a time) work without an account. LanguageTool also works this way in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, Word and LibreOffice.
- Behind a paywall: tone changes on Grammarly and Wordtune, plagiarism checks on QuillBot, Grammarly and Rytr, and AI rewrites on Hemingway. Copy.ai has no free plan any more. Writesonic and Jasper give 7-day trials, and Jasper's needs a card.
- Students: Grammarly gives 50% off one period, Microsoft 365 Personal 50% off, Wordtune 30% off for 12 months, QuillBot up to 25% and LanguageTool up to 20%. ProWritingAid is free for primary and secondary school students if their teacher joins. More in our student guide.
I read the pages of 16 writing tools. Grammar checks are free. Long paraphrases are not.

DeepL Write improves the text you paste in. Write Pro has no length limit and does not store your texts while you are logged in; free texts do not get that protection. Write Pro is an add-on: €6.99 a month billed yearly, on top of a DeepL plan such as Individual at €7.49 a month billed yearly. That is at least €14.48 a month, billed yearly, by our math. Prices were shown to us in euros, VAT included, and depend on your country. Paying for DeepL Pro alone raises the free limit to 2,000 characters.

Notion showed us euro prices.

The free editor scores how easy your text is to read and marks wordy sentences, passive voice and words with simpler options. AI fixes and rewrites are in Editor Plus, with 5,000 AI sentence rewrites a month. Its free grammar checker page promises unlimited words, but its help center lists the advanced grammar checker as paid, so we could not tell how much grammar checking is free. How we checked
Every fact here comes from the company’s own page, with the sentence it is in. The facts checked for this guide show the day we read them. The tables come from our catalogue, which re-reads each price page on its own. When a page does not say something, we write that, and we never guess. How we check
