Free AI courses with a certificate October 2026

Certificates, badges and exams, read on the pages of 20 AI courses. Most are free to learn from. The catch, when there is one, is the certificate.
Checked by hand on 5 October 2026, on each company’s own pages. All 78 quotes re-checked just now and still there.

The short answer
If you read nothing else, read this.
- Free course, free certificate: Career Essentials in Generative AI by Microsoft and LinkedIn (free through 2027), Elements of AI's Introduction to AI, Anthropic's AI Fluency, Simplilearn, Kaggle Learn, Harvard's CS50 AI and Hugging Face's AI Agents Course. Most ask you to pass a test or a project first.
- A free badge, not a certificate: IBM SkillsBuild (in 12 languages, Hindi and Arabic included), OpenAI Academy (about 70 minutes), Cisco Networking Academy and Google Skills. OpenAI says its badges "are not certifications".
- Google AI Essentials is not free: Coursera's own page says "No, you cannot take this course for free." Its 7-day free trial turns into $49 a month in the US and Canada unless you cancel. Other Coursera courses, like AI For Everyone, also charge for the certificate.
- Free to learn, but the certificate costs money: DeepLearning.AI gives its "Accomplishments" only to Pro members ($30 a month). Great Learning charges a fee per certificate, or $19 a month for unlimited ones. Elements of AI's second course, Building AI, charges 50 euros for its certificate.
- Microsoft and AWS certifications need a paid exam: the training is free, but Azure AI Fundamentals (exam AI-901) costs $99 in the US, and AWS Certified AI Practitioner 100 USD a try. Prices can differ by country. AI-900 was retired on June 30, 2026.
- Financial aid: Coursera lets you apply for it on Google AI Essentials and on select programs. If you are approved, you get the course and its certificate.
- No certificate at all: fast.ai and HubSpot's AI for Marketing teach for free but list none. NVIDIA gives a certificate only on select courses.
I read the pages of 20 AI courses. Learning is mostly free. The certificate often is not.

- Certificate
- Free for Introduction to AI
- Course
- Free
- Length
- 6 weeks suggested
- Level
- No coding, some math
Only the first course, Introduction to AI, has a free certificate. The second, Building AI, is free to study, but its shareable certificate costs 50 euros (VAT included where it applies). To pass, finish at least 90% of the exercises and get half of them right. Some exercises count only after you review 3 other learners' answers and get 2 reviews back, so the certificate can take a while. It is digital only, in the language you took the course. They expect 4 to 8 hours for each part of the course.

Questions
Which AI courses give a free certificate?
Career Essentials in Generative AI by Microsoft and LinkedIn (free through 2027), Elements of AI's Introduction to AI, Anthropic's AI Fluency, Simplilearn's Introduction to AI, Kaggle Learn, Harvard's CS50 AI and Hugging Face's AI Agents Course. IBM SkillsBuild, OpenAI Academy, Cisco Networking Academy and Google Skills give a free digital badge instead. Most ask you to pass a test or a project first.
Is the Google AI Essentials certificate free?
No. Coursera's own page says you cannot take Google AI Essentials for free. Its 7-day free trial turns into a $49 a month subscription in the US and Canada unless you cancel, and Google says the cost may be lower in other countries. You can apply for financial aid on the course: if you are approved, you get the course and the certificate. Google Skills, from Google Cloud, lets you earn badges on its free plan.
Is there a free Microsoft AI course with a certificate?
Yes. Career Essentials in Generative AI by Microsoft and LinkedIn is free through 2027 on LinkedIn's free learning page. Pass the final exam to get a Professional Certificate you can add to your LinkedIn profile. Microsoft Learn's AI training is also free, but the Azure AI Fundamentals certification needs exam AI-901, which costs $99 in the US and is priced by country. AI-900 was retired on June 30, 2026.
Can I get a Coursera certificate for free?
Only with financial aid. Coursera says you must buy the Certificate experience to get a course's materials, assignments and certificate, and you can apply for aid on select programs, including Google AI Essentials. The free trial does not help: Coursera Plus says you earn certificates after the trial ends. Some courses offer a "Full Course, No Certificate" option, but it gives no certificate and you cannot buy one later.
Which free AI courses are best for beginners?
With no technical background: OpenAI Academy's AI Foundations (about 70 minutes), Career Essentials in Generative AI by Microsoft and LinkedIn (about 4 hours) and Elements of AI (no programming, some math). Simplilearn (2 hours) and Cisco (6 hours) are also marked for beginners, and all five give a free certificate or badge. Kaggle, Hugging Face, Harvard CS50 AI and fast.ai expect you to know Python.
Is there a free course on AI tools with a certificate?
Cisco's Introduction to Modern AI is free, takes 6 hours and gives a free badge. You get hands-on practice with more than 10 chatbots and AI tools, such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, which may need their own accounts. OpenAI Academy (with your ChatGPT account) and Anthropic's AI Fluency also give a free badge or certificate. HubSpot's AI for Marketing is free but lists no certificate.
How we checked
Every fact here comes from the company’s own page, with the sentence it is in. The facts checked for this guide show the day we read them. The tables come from our catalogue, which re-reads each price page on its own. When a page does not say something, we write that, and we never guess. How we check
